What size do I need?

Start here, because this is where most online bedding orders go wrong. Bed sizes in Pakistan are not standard. A bed made by a carpenter in Lahore and one bought from a showroom in Karachi can carry the same name and differ by four inches. Measure your mattress first. Length, width and depth, in inches, with a tape. Our king sheets measure 94 by 97 inches and come with two pillow covers at 19 by 29 inches each. Single and double sizes are listed on each product page, so check the one you are buying against your own measurement. If you shop by size, go straight to single bed sheets or double bed sheets. One point sellers rarely make. A flat sheet has to be much larger than the mattress, because it needs enough cloth to tuck under on three sides. If your mattress is 78 inches long, a 78 inch sheet will pull loose every night. Allow at least 10 inches spare on each side you plan to tuck. Fitted or flat?

A flat sheet is a plain rectangle you tuck in. A fitted sheet has elastic sewn around the edge so it grips the mattress corners and stays put. Fitted suits anyone tired of remaking the bed each morning, and it suits children who move in their sleep. Flat is easier to wash and iron, fits a wider range of mattress depths, and doubles as a light summer cover on its own. For fitted, the measurement that decides fit is depth, not length. Mattresses here run from about 6 inches to over 10 inches thick, and a sheet cut for a 6 inch mattress will not stretch over a 10 inch one. What is thread count, and is higher better?

You will see codes like T-150, T-200, T-300 and T-400 across this market, sometimes T-800. Thread count is the number of threads woven into one square inch of cloth, counting both directions. Up to a point, a higher number does mean finer, denser cloth. Beyond roughly 400 it stops meaning much, because of how the figure is reached. Mills can twist two or three thin threads together, count each one separately, and print a number two or three times higher without the cloth being any better. A well made 200 count sheet in good cotton will outlast a poorly made 800. So do not shop on the number alone. What decides how a sheet feels and how long it lasts is the quality of the cotton, the tightness of the weave and the finishing. For most homes here, something in the 150 to 300 range is the sensible place to buy.

Percale or sateen, and what suits our weather?

These two words appear on labels across this market and almost nobody explains them. They are not fabrics. They are ways of weaving cotton. Percale is a plain over-under weave. It feels crisp and matte, a little like a fresh shirt, and air passes through it easily. Sateen leaves more thread sitting on the surface, so it feels smooth and carries a soft sheen, and it holds warmth more than percale does. For Pakistan that difference decides the season. From April to September, when a room in Lahore or Karachi stays warm long after sunset and load shedding takes the fan with it, percale and lighter plain weaves are the sensible choice because they breathe. From November to February, sateen, embossed sheets and velvet jacquard make sense. Many families keep two sets and switch, which costs less over years than running one set through the whole year.

Cotton or cotton blend?

Worth reading, because this is where labels get loose. Pure cotton breathes, takes up sweat, and softens with washing. It creases more and takes longer to dry. A blend mixes cotton with polyester, so it creases less, dries faster and costs less, but it does not breathe as well, which you feel in June. Watch the wording when you shop. Cotton blend and cotton rich are not the same as cotton, and some sheets sold under cotton-sounding names hold a good deal of polyester. If the fabric is not stated plainly, ask before you buy. Printed, plain, embroidered or jeans?

Printed sheets hide small marks and creases better, which matters in a busy house. Plain and solid shades are easier to match with curtains and cushions and easier to replace later. Ivory, white and light grey keep a small room feeling open. Deeper shades suit a room that takes strong afternoon sun. Embroidered sheets carry stitched work rather than print, which is why they cost more and why they are the usual pick for a guest room. Dulhan and bridal sheets

A bridal set is bought for how the room looks on the day and for the years after it, so treat it differently from an everyday purchase. Buy for the bed the couple will actually use, not the one in the photographs, and measure it. Order six to eight weeks before the shaadi, because good designs sell out in wedding season and an exchange takes time you will not have. If the set is going into a jahez, pick a shade that works in a room nobody has decorated yet, which usually means ivory, deep red or a soft neutral rather than a strong print. Four things drive that range: the cotton itself, the thread count, the weave, and what comes in the set. We sit in the affordable to middle part of it, and we would rather explain that than dress it up. You are getting cotton, honest sizes and a fair price, not mill-woven luxury with a showroom behind it. If you want the top of the market, you will pay several times more, and you should know that before you shop.

Will it shrink, and how do I wash it?

Cotton shrinks. Any seller who says otherwise is not being straight with you. Expect a small amount on the first wash, usually up to around three percent on cloth that has not been pre-shrunk, which on a king sheet is roughly two inches. This is normal, and it is why buying slightly generous is wise. To keep shrinkage and fading down, wash in cold or warm water rather than hot. Wash dark shades on their own for the first two or three washes, since deep reds and navies release colour early. Dry in shade rather than under direct sun, which is what fades a sheet fastest in a Pakistani summer. Iron on the reverse if the design is printed.
