A bathrobe is what you put on straight out of the shower, or on a cold morning before you dress. It is one of the bathroom accessories that gets used every day, so fit and fabric matter more than on most things you buy for the house. What size do I need?

Almost every robe sold here is listed as standard, large or free size. Those words tell you nothing, and they are why so many robes get returned. Three measurements decide fit. Take them in inches with a tape.

• Chest: Around the fullest part, over a shirt. This is the one that matters most.
• Length: From the top of your shoulder straight down to where you want the hem.
• Sleeve: From shoulder point to wrist.

A robe should wrap generously across the front, not just meet. Allow at least six inches more than your chest measurement so it overlaps properly and stays closed when you sit down. As a rough guide, a medium robe fits a chest around 38 to 40 inches with a length near 40 inches and a sleeve around 22 inches. An extra large sits nearer a 45 inch chest with a length around 42 inches. Our own measurements are on each product page. If you are between sizes, take the larger one. A robe that is slightly big still works. A robe that is slightly small does not close. How long should it be?

Length changes what the robe is for, and nobody explains it. A knee length robe is lighter, easier to move in, and better in summer. A mid calf robe is the usual choice and covers most people to just below the knee. A full length robe reaches the ankle and is warmest, but it catches on stairs and drags on a wet bathroom floor. For a Pakistani summer, shorter is more practical. For a winter morning in Islamabad or upcountry, longer earns its keep.

Men's, women's or unisex?

We carry separate robes for men, women and children, and the cuts are genuinely different. A men's robe is longer in the sleeve and cut straighter through the body. A women's robe is usually shorter in the sleeve and shaped a little at the waist. A unisex robe is normally built to a men's proportion, which is why women often find the sleeves too long and end up rolling them back. Twenty two inches of sleeve suits most men. Twenty is closer to what most women want. If you are buying for a woman and a listing anywhere says only unisex, check that figure before ordering.

Which collar?

Three styles are sold here and the difference is practical, not just a look.

• A shawl collar is the folded band that runs round the neck and down both sides. It is the classic hotel style, it sits flat, and it keeps the neck warm.
• A kimono collar is a flat band with no fold. It is lighter, less bulky at the neck, and dries faster because there is less cloth.
• A hood is the most useful of the three if you have long hair, because it dries your head without a second towel. It is also the sensible pick for children.

Bath robe or dressing gown?

Two different garments, sold side by side, and the difference decides which one you should buy.

• A bath robe is towelling. Its job is to take water off your skin, so it goes on wet and does the drying for you.
• A dressing gown is worn over dry skin, usually over nightwear. It is about warmth or how it looks rather than absorbency. Satin and silk gowns fall into this group.

We carry both. If you want one garment for both jobs, choose towelling, because a towelling robe can be worn dry but a satin gown cannot be worn wet.

Which fabric should you choose?

This decides whether the robe does what you bought it for, and it is worth being straight about. Terry towelling is the same cloth as a towel, with loops on the surface. It soaks up water, so this is what you want straight after a shower. Velour is terry with the loops sheared flat on the outside. It looks smoother and feels plusher, and many people prefer how it hangs. But shearing the loops reduces the surface that takes up water, so a velour robe absorbs less than a plain terry one. Good ones keep the loops on the inside where they still work. Waffle is lighter with a flat honeycomb weave. It absorbs less than terry but dries far faster, which makes it the sensible choice for summer and for humid bathrooms. Fleece and microfibre feel warm and soft and barely absorb anything. They are a lounging garment for cold mornings, not a drying one. Satin and silk do not absorb at all. Buy these for a bridal morning, for a guest room, or as a gift, and pair them with a towel rather than expecting them to dry you. So the rule is simple. Buy towelling to dry off. Buy fleece to stay warm. Buy satin for how it looks.

How heavy should it be?

Towelling robes are sold by weight in grams per square metre, the same as towels. Lighter cloth around 300 to 400 dries quickly and suits Karachi and the summer months. Mid weight around 400 to 500 is the everyday choice for most homes. Heavier than 500 feels thick and holds a lot of water, which is what spas use. A heavy adult robe can weigh over a kilo when dry, and considerably more wet. The same warning applies as with our towels. A heavy robe in Pakistani humidity takes a long time to dry between uses, and one that stays damp on the hook starts to smell within a week. Unless your bathroom has real airflow, lighter is the better buy here.

A robe works best bought alongside the rest of your bathroom accessories rather than on its own. What else to check before you order

Four small things that separate a robe you keep from one you stop wearing.

• Belt loops: Without them the belt slides out every time you take the robe off. Loops stitched into the side seam are worth having.
• Belt length: Long enough to tie at the waist with a little spare. Around 70 inches suits most adults.
• Pockets: Two is standard. Patch pockets sag over time when they carry a phone, while seam pockets hold their shape.

Stitching at the cuffs and hem. This is where a cheap robe frays first.

Robes for children

Buy by height rather than age, since children of the same age vary a lot. Measure from the shoulder to just below the knee and match that to the length on the product page. A hood is more useful than a collar on a child, because it dries hair without a second towel. Keep the belt short, since a long tie on a small child is something to trip over, and trim and re-stitch it if the one supplied hangs low. Lighter cloth is better for children. A heavy robe is hard for a small child to move in and takes too long to dry.

Buying as a gift, or a matching pair

Robes are a common wedding and housewarming gift here, and matching pairs are popular for couples. If you do not know the size, go one larger. Nobody minds a roomy robe and everybody minds a tight one. Neutral shades such as white, ivory and grey suit any bathroom, and white can be bleached back if it stains. For a couple, one men's cut and one women's cut works better than two unisex robes, because sleeve length is the thing people notice. For a bride, a satin gown for the morning and a towelling robe for everyday use is a pairing that actually gets worn.

For hotels, guest houses and salons

Plain white is the sensible choice at volume, because it can be bleached and replaced piece by piece without matching shades a year later. A mid weight cloth survives repeated hot washing better than a heavy one and turns around faster between guests. What moves the price is fabric, weight, size and finish. One caution when comparing. Several sellers in this market show every product permanently at half price. When the sale never ends, the higher figure is not a real price. Compare what you actually pay.

Washing and care

A towelling robe behaves exactly like a towel, so the same rules apply. Never use fabric softener. It coats the loops and permanently reduces how much water the cloth takes up, which is the whole point of the garment. Wash warm rather than hot. Do not overfill the machine, because loops need room to move. Hang it open on a hook rather than folded over a rail. The belt and the hood hold water longest, and a robe folded away damp is how the smell starts. Satin and silk gowns are different. Wash cold on a gentle cycle or hand wash, never wring them, and dry flat in shade rather than on a hanger, which stretches the shoulders. A new towelling robe may not absorb well for the first two or three washes. That is the finish applied at the mill washing out, and it is normal rather than a fault.

What size bathrobe should I buy?

Measure your chest in inches and add at least six inches so the robe wraps properly. If you are between sizes, take the larger one.

What is the difference between a bath robe and a dressing gown?

A bath robe is towelling and dries you after a shower. A dressing gown is worn over dry skin for warmth or for how it looks. Satin and silk gowns are the second kind.

Is velour the same as terry?

Velour is terry with the outer loops sheared flat. It looks smoother but absorbs less. Look for one that keeps the loops on the inside.

Which fabric suits summer here?
