How do I know which size fits my sofa?

Covers are sold by seater count, and this is where most orders go wrong. Count the pieces in your set, not the people who fit on it. A 2 seater is one sofa with two seats. A 3 seater has three. A 5 seater usually means one of two arrangements: a three seater with two single chairs, written as 3+1+1, or a three seater with a two seater, written as 3+2. Both are called 5 seater and they are not the same. Ordering the wrong arrangement leaves you with cloth that fits neither piece properly. Write your own set down in that form before you shop. Then take four measurements in inches: seat width across the front, seat depth from the front edge back to the cushion, arm height from the floor, and back height from the floor. As a reference, a single seat cover in this market is generally cut for a seat around 22 inches wide and 22 inches deep. If your armchair is much wider than that, a ready size will strain across it. Many sofas here are made by a local carpenter rather than bought from a showroom, so they match no standard size at all. Which type should you buy?

Four kinds, and they solve different problems. Quilted is padded and stitched, so it is thick, hides a tired sofa well and takes hard daily use. Best pick for a family lounge. Printed gives you pattern and colour and hides small marks better than a solid shade, which matters in a busy house. Velvet looks rich and suits a drawing room kept for guests. It holds heat and shows dust faster, so it works better from November to February than in a Lahore June. Waterproof is the sensible choice if you have small children or pets, or if tea gets drunk on the sofa. It resists spills rather than absorbing them.

Will it stay in place?

This is the most common complaint about any cover, and it deserves a straight answer. Three things hold a cover on. Elastic hems pull it under the frame. A textured or non slip backing grips the upholstery instead of sliding across it. And foam grip sticks, pushed into the crease between seat and backrest, hold down the loose cloth that otherwise works itself free within a day. Tucking depth matters as much as any of that. Push the cloth deep into every crease before you judge the fit, and give it a day of normal use to settle. One honest caveat. On a leather or rexine sofa, no cover grips perfectly, because the surface is too slick. Grip sticks help a lot. Nothing removes the problem completely. If your sofa is leather, expect to straighten the cover now and then.

L shape and corner sofas

An L needs more care than any other order. Stand in front of the sofa and note which side the long section runs to, because a left facing L and a right facing L are not interchangeable and the wrong one is unusable. Measure each section separately, and measure across the corner join as well. Send us both sets of figures before ordering and we will confirm the fit.

Do cushion covers come with it?

Check the individual product listing, because this differs between designs. Where cushion covers are included, the usual rule is one per seat. Dust, sun and everyday wear

Most people here buy a cover to protect furniture rather than to restyle it, and that is a sound reason. Dust settles constantly in most Pakistani homes and works into upholstery, where it is hard to get out. Strong afternoon sun through a lounge window fades the arms and backrest of a sofa within a single season. A cover takes both, and washing a cover is far easier than cleaning a sofa. It also absorbs the everyday cost of children, tea and guests. This is also why covers sell heavily before Eid and before guest season. A cover refreshes a room in a day.

Washing and care

Machine wash cold or warm, never hot. Heat shrinks stretch fabric, and a cover that shrinks even slightly will no longer pull over the frame. Do not bleach. Dry in shade rather than direct sun, which fades colour fastest in summer. In a busy house, wash every four to six weeks. Waterproof covers should be washed gently and air dried, since high heat damages the backing that makes them water resistant in the first place.

Which type is best for a house with children?

Waterproof or quilted. Waterproof resists spills, quilted takes rough daily use and hides marks.

Will it shrink in the wash?

It can if washed hot. Use cold or warm water and dry in shade. A shrunk stretch cover will not go back over the frame.
