What an AC blanket is

It is a thin blanket meant for a cooled room, not for cold weather. Most people here call it ac kambal. You use it in May through September when the AC is on all night, and again on mild nights in October and March when a razai is too heavy. The same product is sold under several names, which causes real confusion. You will see it listed as a summer blanket, an air conditioned blanket, and in a few shops as part of a winter collection. It is the same thing. What separates one from another is the fabric and the weight, not the label.

Sizes in inches

Almost no seller in Pakistan publishes a blanket size. You get the words single and double and nothing more, so you cannot tell whether it will hang over the sides of your bed or sit short. Our double is 80 x 90 inches. On a standard double bed that gives you enough to tuck at the foot and still cover both people without pulling. If your bed takes our king bed sheets at 94 x 97 inches, a double blanket will cover the sleeping area but will not reach the floor on either side. That is normal for a blanket and different from a bedspread.

GSM, and why it decides everything

GSM means grams per square metre. It is the weight of the cloth. A higher number means a denser blanket that holds warmth better, drapes properly instead of floating, and lasts more seasons. No AC blanket listing we checked in Pakistan prints a GSM figure. Ask any seller for this number before you buy. If they cannot tell you, the cloth is thin.

Fleece, flannel and plush

Four different words get used for cloth that looks similar in a photograph. Fleece is brushed on both sides and holds air, so it feels warmer for its weight. Flannel is brushed on one side and feels smoother and flatter. Microfiber plush has a longer pile and feels soft in the hand, but a long pile with low GSM behind it flattens quickly. Cotton blankets breathe more and suit humid Karachi nights, though they hold less warmth at a low AC setting.

Which weight for your AC setting

The reason you need a blanket in June is that your room is genuinely cold, and your body is meant to cool down at night. The Sleep Foundation puts the best room temperature for sleep at about 18 degrees Celsius, with most doctors suggesting a range of roughly 16 to 20 degrees. That is close to where most people set the AC, and it is why a cover feels necessary even in peak summer. At 18 to 20 degrees you want a heavier fleece. At 22 to 24 a mid weight is enough. At 26 in a humid Karachi room, a cotton blanket or a light sheet is usually better than fleece.

Why one blanket costs Rs 1,600 and another costs Rs 6,000

You will see AC blankets online at Rs 1,200 for a single and Rs 1,600 for a double. Ours cost more, so here is the straight answer. Thin fleece pills. Small balls of fibre form on the surface after a few washes, the blanket goes rough and patchy, and by the second summer it looks worn out. That happens when the pile is long but the cloth behind it is light. A heavier weave with shorter, denser pile does not do this. Also look at how the cheaper prices are built. Across the sellers we checked, every blanket was on sale, all year, at discounts of 31 to 56 percent, with claimed original prices between Rs 2,750 and Rs 7,999. A price that is always reduced is just the price. Compare what you actually pay, and ask for the GSM.

Your new blanket will shed a little

Fleece loses loose fibre for the first two or three washes. You will find lint in the machine and on your clothes. It stops after that and it is not a fault. Fleece also carries static in dry weather, more in a Lahore January than in July. Skip fabric softener, which coats the fibres and flattens the surface over time. A short shake before use is enough.

Made to export weight

Washing and how long it lasts

Cold water, gentle cycle, no softener, dry in shade. Heat damages the fibre, so keep it off a hot roof in June and out of a hot dryer. A blanket at our weight should give you four or five seasons of regular use before the surface starts to go. A light one often does not last two.

Blanket or comforter

A blanket is one layer of cloth. A comforter has filling stitched inside it and is much warmer. For AC months you want the blanket. For a real winter you want a comforter set, or a quilt cover with filling inside. Heavier winter options sit in blankets and throws.

Can I use it in winter?

As a layer, yes. On its own in a Lahore January it will not be enough. You want a comforter or a filled quilt then.

Why is my new blanket shedding?

Fleece releases loose fibre for the first two or three washes. It settles after that and is not a defect.

Will it pill after washing?

Thin fleece does. Denser cloth resists it. Wash cold, skip fabric softener, and dry in shade to slow it down.
