What does it actually do?

A mattress takes in sweat, skin oils, spills and everything else that reaches it. Once that soaks into the foam or fibre, you cannot wash it out. A protector gives you a barrier you can pull off and put through the machine instead. Warranty is the second reason, and it is the one people find out about too late. Most mattress warranties are void once the mattress is stained. If you have just bought a mattress, a protector is protecting the money you spent, not just the sleep surface. Two things it does not do. It is not a topper, so it adds no padding and will not make a hard mattress softer. And a top-only protector does nothing about dust mites already inside the mattress.

Will it make the bed hot?

This is the question that decides whether you keep using it after the first week, and almost nobody selling these in Pakistan answers it. Cheap protectors are a plastic or PVC sheet. They stop water and they also stop air. Body heat and sweat have nowhere to go, so the bed feels warm and damp within an hour. In a Lahore or Karachi summer, especially when load shedding takes the fan, that protector is off the bed by the end of the week. A properly made one works differently. It has a soft cotton terry surface bonded to a very thin breathable membrane underneath, usually TPU or a PU lamination. Liquid cannot pass through it, but air and water vapour can, so the bed stays much closer to normal temperature. Three checks before you buy anything, from us or anyone else. Press it and listen, because a loud crackle means plastic. Feel it, because it should feel like cloth and not like a bag. And ask what the backing layer is made of. If a seller cannot tell you, that is your answer.

Does it change how the bed feels?

A good one does not. The terry surface has a slight grip to it, which actually stops your fitted sheet sliding around, so the bed feels the same or a little more settled. What you notice with a bad one is noise. Every time you turn, it rustles. That is the plastic layer, and it is the single most common complaint people have after buying cheap. Quiet is worth paying a little more for on something you sleep on every night.

Fitted, flat or zipped?

Three different products doing three different jobs.

• A fitted protector has an elastic skirt and covers the top and sides like a fitted sheet. It suits most homes and is easiest to take off on a bad night.
• A flat one lies loose on the surface under the sheet. It shifts during the night and slides off the corners, which is why it is the weakest of the three.
• A zipped encasement wraps the whole mattress on all six sides and closes with a zip. It is the only version that seals a mattress in, and therefore the only one that creates a real barrier against dust mites and bed bugs. If that is why you are buying, a top-only cover will not do the job.

What size do I need?

Measure your mattress before ordering. Length, width and depth, in inches. Depth is the measurement people forget and the one that decides fit. Mattresses here run from around 6 inches thick to 10 inches or more, and a skirt cut for 6 inches will not stretch over 9. Better made protectors state a depth range, for example fits 6 to 15 inches, so check that figure against the side of your mattress. Bed sizes in Pakistan are not standard, since many beds are made by a local carpenter rather than bought from a showroom. How to choose a good one

Six things worth checking, whoever you buy from:

• A breathable membrane backing rather than a plain plastic sheet
• A cotton or cotton blend terry surface, not bare synthetic
• A stated depth range that covers your mattress thickness
• Quiet when you move on it
• Full elastic all the way round rather than corner straps
• Machine washable at a normal temperature

If a listing tells you none of these, that itself is useful information about what you are being sold.

Who needs one?

Parents of a child who wets the bed. The most common reason people buy, and nothing to feel awkward about. A protector saves the mattress and saves you scrubbing at two in the morning. Keep a spare so the bed is never out of action. Families caring for an elderly relative, or someone recovering at home after illness or surgery. Anyone with a new mattress, for the warranty reason above. Guest houses, hostels and clinics, where beds turn over constantly and a stained mattress is an expense nobody budgeted for. How do I wash it?

This is where most protectors get ruined, and the damage cannot be undone. Heat destroys the waterproof layer. Wash cold or warm on a gentle cycle, never hot. Tumble dry on low or hang it to dry. Do not iron it and do not bleach it. Do not use fabric softener either. Softener clogs the membrane, which is the part doing all the work, and once it is clogged the protector both breathes less and protects less. Wash every few weeks in normal use, or straight away after an accident. Having a second one means you are not waiting for the first to dry.

How long does one last?

A protector is a consumable, not furniture. With normal use and correct washing, expect a couple of years. Replace it when it starts to crackle, when the backing feels stiff or begins to flake, or when liquid starts getting through in patches. Those are signs the membrane has broken down, and washing will not bring it back. Anyone telling you a protector lasts forever is selling you something.

Prices in Pakistan

Protectors here commonly sell between Rs 1,500 and Rs 4,300, depending on size, surface fabric and backing quality. Zipped encasements cost more than fitted covers, because there is more material and a zip. What you are paying for is mostly the backing. A plastic sheet is cheap to make. A thin breathable membrane bonded to cotton terry is not. One caution when comparing. Several sellers in this market show every product permanently at half price. When a discount never ends, the higher figure is not a real price. Compare what you actually pay rather than the percentage on the label.

Pillows take in more sweat and skin oil than the mattress does, because your head is on them all night and they are rarely washed. A pillow protector costs a fraction of a mattress cover and does the same job on the part of the bed that gets the most contact. Common questions

Will it make my bed hot?

A plastic backed one will. One with a breathable membrane and a cotton terry surface lets air and vapour through, so the difference is much smaller. Check what the backing is made of before buying.

Does it go under or over the sheet?

Under. The protector goes directly on the mattress and your bed sheet goes on top of it.

What size fits a king mattress?

Measure yours first. King beds in Pakistan often run around 72 by 78 inches with a 9 to 10 inch depth, but sizes vary. Depth matters as much as length and width.

Does it stop bed bugs and dust mites?

Only a zipped encasement sealing all six sides creates that barrier. A top-only fitted cover does not.

Can I wash it in hot water?

No. Heat permanently damages the waterproof layer. Wash cold or warm, dry on low, and skip the fabric softener.

Is it noisy?

A plastic one is. A membrane backed one with a terry surface is close to silent. If it crackles loudly in the packet, it will crackle under you.

How long does one last?

Around a couple of years with normal use. Replace it when it crackles, stiffens, or lets liquid through in patches.
