Silk Curtains in Pakistan: Sizes, Prices and What the Fabric Really Is

What silk means in the Pakistani curtain market

Ask this in a shop and you rarely get a straight answer, so here it is. Almost nothing sold as a silk curtain in Pakistan is silk from a silkworm. Real silk at curtain size would cost several times what anyone here charges. What the market sells is a woven satin, and the honest name for it is faux silk. One seller even lists a product called imported silk curtains, then calls the finish silk inspired in its own bullets. Ours are a woven satin, and we would rather say so than let you guess. That is good news. Real silk weakens when wet, marks where water touches it, and breaks down in strong sun faster than almost any fibre. A window facing the June sun would ruin it. A woven satin holds its colour, takes a wash and does not spot. For a Lahore window it is the better cloth, not the compromise.

Why the colour changes through the day

This is the fabric's best quality and it comes from the weave. A patent record held by the United States Patent and Trademark Office puts it plainly. In a satin weave the warp yarns run across the surface in long floats instead of crossing at every thread. Fewer crossings give a smoother face, so light reflects rather than scatters. So one panel gives you two rooms. Morning light lands flat and the colour reads soft. Evening light comes in at an angle and the same panel looks deeper. Those floats have two honest consequences. The surface snags on rough edges more easily than a plain weave, so keep rings and hooks smooth. And sheen shows every crease, so these want a day or two to settle.

Which room suits them

Not a bedroom that needs to go dark. This fabric filters daylight, it does not stop it. If your room takes direct afternoon sun, choose our velvet curtains instead. That matters here, since Lahore June highs routinely pass 40°C, according to the Lahore District climate page published by the Government of Punjab. These suit a north facing bedroom, a guest room, a drawing room you want bright, or a door panel. One note. A pale panel with the lights on at night shows shapes from outside, so darker shades give more privacy after dark.

Colours

Nine shades. Black, brown, firozi, golden, grey, off white, red, silver and yellow. Firozi is the turquoise blue green that most sites list as aqua or teal, and it is the word people here actually use. On a satin weave the sheen lifts the blue in daylight and drops it towards green by evening. Silver and off white suit dark wood furniture. Black and brown are the practical picks for a window taking strong sun. We do not carry a pure white, so off white is our palest shade.

Sizes

Five options, each panel 4.5 feet wide, with drops of 7, 7.5, 8, 8.5 and 9 feet. In inches that is 54 wide and 84 to 108 long, two panels per set. Longer can be stitched on request. Measure from the top of your rod to the floor, pick the nearest drop, then take off half an inch so the panel clears the ground. For a door, check it clears the handle. On width, two panels give nine feet of cloth. Folds need about one and a half to two times your rod length, so nine feet suits a rod of five to six feet. Washing and care

Cold water, gentle handling, no wringing. Hang the panel damp and let its weight pull the creases out, which beats ironing. If a crease will not drop, use a cool iron on the reverse with a cloth between. A hot iron on the face glazes the surface and leaves a permanent shiny mark. Keep the panel off rough hooks and sharp ring edges. If a thread pulls, do not cut it. Ease it back through from the reverse with a needle.
