Blanket or throw

These are two different things and the words get mixed up constantly. A blanket covers a bed and is cut to the bed size. Most homes here simply call it a kambal. A throw is smaller, usually around 50 x 60 inches, and goes over a sofa, an armchair or across the foot of a bed. It is for sitting under and for looks, not for sleeping under. Everything on this page is bed size. If you want a small sofa throw, check the inches wherever you buy, because many listings use the word throw for a full double bed blanket.

The blanket words you will see, and what they mean

Six words get used across this market for cloth that looks alike in a photo, at prices from under Rs 2,000 to over Rs 16,000. Almost nobody explains the difference, so here it is before you compare anything.

• Fleece is brushed on both sides. It traps air, so it feels warm for its weight, and it is what most blankets sold here are made from. It is what ours are.
• Flannel is brushed on one side only. It sits flatter and smoother and is the lightest of the group.
• Plush has a longer pile. It feels soft in the hand, but a long pile over light cloth flattens fast.
• Sherpa has a curly, wool like backing bonded to a smooth face. Much warmer, much heavier, priced near Rs 6,000 in this market.
• Chenille is a woven yarn with raised texture. It looks better than it insulates and usually costs around Rs 10,000.
• Mink and velvet describe the finish rather than the warmth. Both feel dense and smooth to the hand.

How to judge any blanket in three checks

Almost no seller in Pakistan publishes the numbers that matter, so here is how to work them out yourself. These tests work on any blanket, ours included.

1. Work out the GSM: GSM means grams per square metre, which is simply how heavy the cloth is. Weigh the blanket in grams, then multiply its length by its width in metres and divide. A double at 80 x 90 inches is 2.03 by 2.29 metres, so 4.65 square metres. A two kilogram blanket at that size works out near 430 GSM. The same size at one and a quarter kilograms is closer to 270. That is the difference between a blanket you keep for years and one you replace next winter.
2. Count the layers: Look closely at a hemmed edge. Double ply shows two separate layers bonded together and weighs roughly twice as much. Single ply is one layer, velvety on the face and smooth behind, and suits March through November across most of the country.
3. Rub the surface: Press your palm down and rub hard for a few seconds. If loose fibre balls up straight away, that cloth will pill after a few washes and go rough by the second season.

What the price actually buys

Blankets in Pakistan run from around Rs 1,963 for thin flannel, to roughly Rs 3,500 for microfiber plush, Rs 4,300 to Rs 5,000 for plush, near Rs 6,000 for sherpa, close to Rs 10,000 for chenille, and past Rs 16,000 for a weighted blanket. What you gain moving up that range is weight and how long the surface survives. Run the palm test on a cheap fleece and you will feel the answer in about five seconds. Watch the discounts too. Which blanket for which month

May to September, with the AC running, you want the lightest single ply. Those are our AC blankets. October, November and March, when the AC is off but a razai is too much, a mid weight fleece is right. December to February in Lahore, Islamabad or Faisalabad, one blanket alone is not enough. Use it over a comforter set, or over a quilt cover with filling inside. A quilt, which most families call a razai, has filling stitched in and is far warmer than any single layer of cloth. For a Murree or Kaghan winter no single blanket will do the job. In Karachi you will rarely need the heavy one at all.

Electric and heated blankets

We do not sell them, but people search for them, so here is what to know. An electric blanket has heating wires inside and plugs into the wall. The Electrical Safety Foundation International reports that heating pads and electric blankets cause close to 500 fires a year in the United States, and that almost all of them involve blankets more than ten years old. Their guidance is to keep nothing on top of one while it runs, never plug it into an extension board, and replace it once the cloth or cord shows wear. In most homes here the wiring load and the switching of power make a wired blanket more trouble than it is worth. A heavier blanket over a filled quilt gives the same warmth with nothing plugged in.

Shedding, pilling and washing

New fleece drops loose fibre for the first two or three washes. You will find lint in the machine. It stops, and it is not a fault. That is different from pilling, where the surface itself breaks down and does not recover. Wash cold on a gentle cycle. Skip fabric softener, which coats the fibres and flattens the surface. Dry in shade, never on a hot roof in June. Fleece also builds static in a dry Lahore January, which is normal and harmless. A blanket at our weight should give four or five seasons of regular use. A light one often does not reach two.

Made to export weight

What is the difference between a blanket and a throw?
