Embossed, jacquard or quilted: three different things

Shops in Pakistan use these three words as if they mean the same thing. They do not, and the difference explains most of the price gap you will see while shopping.

• Embossed, A finish: The pattern is pressed into finished cloth with heat and rollers.
• Jacquard, Woven: The pattern comes from the loom itself, so it runs through the cloth rather than sitting on it.
• Quilted, Stitched: Layers are held together with thread, which is why quilted sets feel padded.

What emboss velvet and Malai actually mean

Emboss velvet is velvet cloth that has been through the embossing rollers. Most sellers here call the softer grade Malai, which is simply the local name buyers and shopkeepers use for that finish. It is not a separate fibre and it is not a brand. If a listing says Emboss Velvet (Malai), it is telling you the fabric is a soft velvet, nothing more. Velvet has a pile, meaning short fibres standing up from the base cloth. Pile is what makes velvet look deep and rich from one angle and lighter from another. It is also the reason velvet needs different care from cotton, which we come to below.

Why prices run from about Rs 1,800 to Rs 9,200

Two very different products share the name embossed in this market, and no shop explains it. That gap is why shoppers get confused when they compare prices.

• Embossed velvet sets: Heavier cloth, frilled sheet, appliqué work on the covers, often 5 pieces. Sold across Pakistan at roughly Rs 8,500 to Rs 9,200.
• Embossed stripe sets: Lighter cloth with a pressed stripe texture, usually 3 pieces and no frill. Sold at roughly Rs 1,800 to Rs 2,100

These are not the same product at two quality levels. They are different fabrics for different rooms and different seasons. Check which one a listing is actually selling before you judge it on price, and check the piece count too, since a 5 piece set and a 3 piece set are rarely worth comparing directly. What aplic work means on a listing

Aplic is how appliqué is written on most Pakistani bedding sites. It means shapes cut from fabric and stitched onto the pillow or cushion cover to build a raised design. Because it sits on the surface, aplic covers should be washed more gently than the sheet itself. Almost every embossed velvet listing in this market mentions aplic work without ever saying what it is.

Why the sheet size looks smaller than a cotton chadar

This confuses more buyers than anything else in the category, and it is worth reading before you order. A cotton chadar is cut long so you can tuck it under the gaddha on all sides. An embossed velvet sheet is not. It is cut to sit on the top of the mattress with a wide frill, commonly around 15 inches, hanging down the sides like a skirt. Velvet sheets in this category are usually listed near 72 x 78 inches for that reason. That is not a smaller sheet. It is a different design that covers the same bed in a different way. So measure the top surface of your mattress, not the drop. If the sheet covers the top and the frill reaches down the side, it fits. Exact measurements for the sheet, pillow covers and cushions are listed on each product page, so check the one you like rather than assuming every set is cut the same. Embossed velvet is bought by shade first and pattern second, which is why most sellers run one design across many colours. Deep shades like black, navy, maroon and charcoal show the raised pattern most clearly, because the texture reads through light and shadow rather than through colour. Golden, yellow and beige give a softer effect and suit rooms with white walls. Grey and zinc sit between the two and are the easiest to match with curtains you already own. In a small room, a lighter shade keeps the space feeling open. In a large room with strong daylight, deep colours hold their richness better.

How to wash embossed velvet without flattening the pattern

Here we differ from what you will read elsewhere. Some sellers describe the embossed pattern as permanent because it is heat set. Heat set is accurate. Permanent is not. The same heat that put the pattern in can take it out, and crushed pile is the most common complaint with velvet bedding anywhere in the world.

1.  Wash cold on a gentle cycle, or by hand. Never hot.
2.  Use mild detergent. No bleach and no fabric softener.
3.  Do not wring or rub. Squeeze the water out and let it drain.
4.  Dry flat in shade, not hanging over a line, which stretches the pile.
5.  Do not iron the patterned face. If you must press it, work from the reverse with a thick towel underneath and the pattern facing down.

Is embossed velvet right for your room?

Velvet is a winter fabric. It holds warmth, which is exactly what you want in Lahore from late November through February, and in a room that runs cold under air conditioning. It is not the right choice for a June night with the fan on. If you want a similar look in a lighter cloth for summer, take embroidered cotton or printed cotton instead. Will the embossed pattern flatten after washing?

It can, if you wash hot, wring the cloth, or iron the patterned face. Washed cold and dried flat in shade, the raised texture holds. Lightly crushed pile can usually be brought back by misting with water and brushing gently in the direction of the pile.

Can I iron an embossed velvet bed sheet?

Not on the patterned side. Lay it face down on a thick towel and press from the reverse with a low setting, lifting rather than sliding the iron. Direct heat on the face crushes the pile and leaves shine marks.

What size embossed sheet fits a Pakistani double bed?
