What is a bedspread, and how is it different?

Three words get mixed up constantly in Pakistani bedding, and buying the wrong one is easy. A bedspread is the outer layer. It goes over everything else and drapes down the sides. Its job is to make the bed look finished during the day, and it is what a guest sees. A comforter is filled and you sleep under it. Warmth is the point. Where does it go on the bed?

Nobody explains the order, and people get it wrong. The mattress protector goes on first, directly on the mattress. Then your bed sheet. Then any comforter or blanket you sleep under. The spread goes on last, over everything, and is pulled back or folded to the foot of the bed at night. That is why a spread is bigger than a sheet. It has to cover the layers underneath it, not just the mattress.

Embossed or quilted: what is the difference?

Almost everything sold in this market is called quilted, and almost nobody says what that means. Quilted is two layers of cloth with a thin layer of wadding between them, stitched through in a pattern to hold the filling in place. It adds weight and some warmth. The thing to check is how close the stitching sits. Widely spaced stitching lets the wadding shift and bunch after a few washes, and once it bunches it does not go back. Embossed is different. The pattern is pressed into the cloth itself using heat and pressure, so the texture is in the fabric rather than in stitching over filling. There is no wadding to move or clump. Ours are embossed. That makes them lighter, better at draping over the sides, and much faster to dry. It also makes them a year round piece rather than a winter one.

What comes in the set?

Three pieces. One king size spread at 94 by 97 inches, and two pillow covers at 19 by 29 inches. What is not included: a bed sheet, a comforter, or cushion covers. We say this plainly because sellers here often list a five piece set at similar money where two of those pieces are small cushion covers. Count what is actually in the box.

What size do I need?

A spread is measured differently from a sheet, and this is where orders go wrong. A sheet tucks under the mattress. A spread does not. It has to cover the mattress and then hang down both sides, so what matters is mattress width plus the drop on the left and the drop on the right. Here is the arithmetic with our size. A common Pakistani king mattress runs around 72 inches wide and 78 inches long. Our spread at 94 inches wide gives you 22 inches spare, so about 11 inches of drop on each side. At 97 inches long it gives 19 inches spare, which covers the foot of the bed with enough left to tuck behind the pillows. Eleven inches of drop covers the mattress and the frame on most beds. If your bed sits high, or you want the cloth reaching the floor, measure from the top of the mattress down to where you want it to end, double that, and add it to your mattress width. One thing to check: if your bed has a footboard, a full spread will bunch at the corners rather than hang. Many beds here do not have one, but it is worth looking before you order. Which fabric works here?

Cotton is the sensible choice for a piece that lives on the bed through the year. It breathes, it washes like a sheet, and it does not hold heat the way a filled or synthetic spread does. Heavier fabrics such as palachi and velvet look rich in photographs and suit a formal room in December, but they trap warmth and take days to dry after washing. Microfibre is cheaper and dries quickly but does not breathe. Ours are pure cotton with an embossed finish, which is why they suit a Karachi summer as well as a Lahore winter.

Summer or winter?

A spread sits in an awkward seasonal place and nobody addresses it. A quilted spread with wadding inside is really a winter piece. In June it becomes something you fold away rather than use. An embossed cotton spread works in both. In summer it is often the only layer on the bed, used on its own over the sheet on warm nights. In winter it goes over the comforter as a top layer. That flexibility is the practical reason to choose embossed over quilted in this climate.

Which colours work?

Because a spread is the layer everyone sees, colour matters more here than on a sheet that spends its life under a quilt. Ivory, beige and soft grey suit a small room and make it feel larger. Deeper shades hold up better in a room with children and hide marks between washes. Strong colours look best when the rest of the room is plain, since the spread is already carrying the pattern. For guest rooms and gifting

This is what most people here actually buy a spread for. The guest room bed sits unused for weeks, then relatives arrive and it needs to look right. A spread does that job better than anything else, because it covers whatever is underneath and takes the dust that settles between visits. Shake it out and the bed is ready. It is also a common wedding and housewarming gift. Choose a neutral shade if you have not seen the room, and buy for the bed the couple will actually use rather than the one in the photographs.

Washing and care

Cotton, so it washes like a bed sheet rather than like a quilt. That is one of the real advantages of embossed over quilted. Machine wash cold or warm, never hot, since heat can flatten the embossed pattern over time. Wash dark shades separately for the first two or three washes. Dry in shade rather than direct sun, which fades colour fastest in a Pakistani summer. Iron on the reverse side if you iron at all. Pressing directly on the embossed face smooths the texture out, which is the thing you paid for. Expect a small amount of shrinkage on the first wash, as with any cotton.

What drives price is the fabric, whether the piece is quilted or embossed, the piece count and the size. One caution when comparing. Several sellers here show every product permanently at half price or more, with one running a discount close to 80 percent that never ends.
