Plain Bed Sheets in Pakistan
A plain bed sheet is cotton dyed a single colour, with no print and no stitching on the surface. That makes the cloth itself the whole product, so what you are paying for is the weave and the dye rather than a design. Ours are cotton, dyed and finished in Lahore and sold online with cash on delivery anywhere in the country.
What plain dyed means
Almost every shop uses the words plain dyed and none of them explain it. The cloth is woven first in its natural colour, then the finished piece goes into the dye. That is different from yarn dyed cloth, where the thread is coloured before it reaches the loom. The difference matters in one practical way. Piece dyed cloth takes colour on the surface of the woven fabric, so how well that colour is fixed decides how the sheet looks after a year of washing. Dye that is properly fixed stays. Dye that is not will lift a little with every wash, and on a solid colour you will see it.Sizes, and why the same name means different numbers
This category has a problem nobody admits to. Across Pakistani shops, a king plain bed sheet is listed anywhere from about 94 by 97 inches to about 104 by 95 inches. A queen is often near 90 by 95. A single sits around 60 by 95. Same words, different cloth. There are two reasons. Bed frames built by a carpenter here vary more than factory ones, and different sellers cut for different amounts of tuck. Neither is wrong. It just means the label is not enough. So measure the length, width and depth of your gaddha before ordering, then read the actual inches on the product page rather than the size name. Every listing on our site carries its own measurements.- For a single bed, take a single or queen cut depending on the mattress width.
- For most Pakistani double beds, take a double or king size so there is cloth left to tuck on both sides.
Choosing a colour
Solid colour has nowhere to hide. A printed sheet fades slowly and you rarely notice, because the pattern keeps your eye busy. Put a year old plain pillow cover beside a new one in the same shade and the difference shows across the room. That is what solid colour does, not a fault in the cloth, and it is why the washing advice below matters more here than in any other bedding.- Mid tones: Grey, taupe, beige, sage and sky blue hold their look longest and hide the odd mark. The safest choice for a bed in daily use.
- Deep shades: Burgundy, navy, chocolate and charcoal look rich against wooden furniture, but they fade faster in strong sun and show lint more.
- Pale shades: Ivory, cream and blush keep a small room feeling open. They show stains sooner.
- White: Its own subject, covered below.
Plain white bed sheets, and keeping them white
White is the most bought colour in this category and the one people give up on. It does not have to go that way. White cotton turns yellow for reasons that have almost nothing to do with the cloth. Body oils, sweat and skin cream soak into the fibres, and heat later oxidises them into a visible yellow. Too much detergent or fabric softener leaves residue that traps those oils instead of rinsing them away. Hard water, which most of Lahore has, leaves calcium and iron deposits that bake in. The instinct is to reach for chlorine bleach, and that often makes it worse. Clorox, which makes the bleach, says plainly that using too much causes yellowing. Repeated heavy bleaching also weakens cotton and strips the optical brighteners applied at the mill, which leaves the natural off white of the fibre showing through.- Wash white separately and more often than colours, before the oils build up.
- Use less detergent, not more, and skip fabric softener entirely.
- Use an oxygen based whitener rather than chlorine bleach for regular brightening.
- Dry white in the sun. Sunlight bleaches naturally, and this is the one colour where a Lahore afternoon on the line works for you.
Plain black and dark sheets
Black is the hardest colour to keep looking new, and it is worth knowing before you buy rather than after. It fades faster than any other shade in direct sun, and it shows lint, dust and stray hair more than anything else on a bed. Wash it separately and inside out, keep it out of the sun to dry, and expect to shake it out more often. It still looks excellent in a room with pale walls, which is why people keep choosing it.Plain, printed or embroidered
- Plain: Calmest look, pairs with patterned curtains, easiest to match across a room. Shows stains and fading most.
- Printed: Hides marks best and costs least. The practical choice for a bed used by children.
- Embroidered: Thread stitched into the cloth, heavier and dearer, and needs gentler washing. Suited to occasions and jahez sets.
What you are paying for when there is no design
- Thread count: T-144 and T-150 are lighter and dry fast. T-200 and above is tighter and smoother. On a solid you feel the difference more, because no pattern is distracting you.
- Weave: A plain weave gives matte, crisp, cool cloth. A satin weave gives a smoother face with a slight sheen and feels warmer.
- Dye fixing: The part you cannot see, and the part that decides how the sheet looks in a year. Hem and stitching. On plain cloth a crooked or fraying hem is the first thing anyone notices.
Matching a whole room in one colour
The main reason people choose solids is to pull a room together. Take the same shade across the sheet, the duvet cover and the cushion covers, and a plain room reads as deliberate rather than empty. The easier version is to keep the sheet plain and let one patterned piece carry the room.Washing plain cotton so the colour holds
- Wash a new coloured sheet on its own the first time. Loose dye comes off in that wash.
- Turn it inside out and wash cold on a gentle cycle.
- Use mild detergent and no bleach on anything coloured.
- Dry coloured sheets in shade. Dry white ones in the sun. This is the one rule that goes in opposite directions.
- Do not overload the machine, since cloth that cannot move does not rinse properly.
