Fancy Curtain Designs in Pakistan: Laser Cut, Monogram and Double Layer Velvet

What makes a curtain fancy

The word gets used loosely here. On this page it means one of three things, and each is made a different way.

Laser cut: the pattern is cut through

A focused beam cuts the design through the face layer of velvet, leaving open shapes that a second colour shows through from behind. That is why these sets are named as two colours, such as beige and black or blue and golden. The interesting part is what happens at the edge of each cut. A patent record held by the United States Patent and Trademark Office explains that the fabric melts locally as the beam passes, which gives a clean edge and greatly reduces the risk of fraying, so the cut needs no further finishing. There is a second patent record covering the same method used on window coverings specifically. So a laser cut pattern holds its shape in a way that a pattern cut by blade or punch would not. The openings stay crisp instead of unravelling at the corners.

Monogram: the pattern is woven in

Here the motif repeats across the cloth and is part of the weave itself. Nothing is cut and nothing is removed. You see texture and a change of light across the surface rather than open shapes. Monogram suits a room where you want richness without the panel looking busy. Laser cut suits a room where the parda is meant to be the thing people notice.

Cut, woven or pressed

Three methods, three results, and it is worth knowing which you are buying. Cut means material removed and a contrast layer behind. Woven means the pattern built into the cloth on the loom. Pressed means heat and rollers flattening the velvet pile into a design, which is how our embossed curtains are made. All three are velvet, so all three start from the same cloth. Double parda: the four piece set

A four piece set is two velvet panels, two white chiffon panels, and two belts. One panel cannot give you light and privacy at the same time. Chiffon stays closed through the day. It softens the light, keeps the room bright, and stops people seeing in from the street or the neighbouring roof. Velvet closes in the evening, or in the afternoon against direct sun. One practical point that catches people after delivery. A four piece set needs two rods, or a double bracket that holds two rods on one fitting. For the drawing room, and for the lounge

These two rooms want different things even though people search for both as one. A formal drawing room is where guests are received. It is used less often and seen more carefully, so it carries the strongest pattern well. Laser cut in a deep two tone reads as intended here. Hang the rod close to the ceiling and the room looks taller than it is. A TV lounge or baithak is used every day. Afternoon glare on the screen is the real problem, and monogram or a four piece set handles it without the room feeling heavy.

Curtains for a shaadi hall or event

Halls and marquees need long drops and wide runs, and the date does not move. Colours and two tone pairs

The four piece sets pair white chiffon with velvet in beige, black, brown, cream and grey. Two colours in one name is not a styling choice. On a laser cut panel the second colour is the layer behind the cuts, so the pair is built into how the curtain is made. A high contrast pair, such as black and white, makes the pattern read from across the room. A close pair, such as chocolate brown and camel, gives texture without the pattern shouting. Beige, camel and chocolate sit well against the dark wood furniture common in Pakistani drawing rooms. Grey and off white suit a room with newer, lighter furniture. Black and golden works where you want one strong feature against pale walls.

Sizes and made to order

We do not sell fixed lengths. Each set is stitched once you order, and length can be increased on request. Measure the rod, not the glass. For width, order a total panel width of one and a half to two times your rod length. Eyelet headings sit at the lower end of that. A panel the same width as the rod hangs flat and looks thin when closed. For drop, measure from the top of the rod down to the floor and take off half an inch so the panel clears the ground. Eyelet rings, belts and your rod

Every set in this range has stainless steel eyelet rings sewn into the top. Eyelets slide straight onto a round rod and need no hooks or clips. Measure the diameter of your rod first, because a thick rod will not pass through a standard ring. If your wall carries a track or a hook rail rather than a round rod, eyelet panels will not hang on it without new hardware. Send a photograph and we will tell you what works. The two belts hold each panel back during the day. They also keep the folds even, which matters more on a patterned panel than a plain one, since a badly gathered laser cut design hides its own pattern.

Cleaning and dust

Do not machine wash these. Velvet pile crushes under pressure. On a laser cut panel there is a second problem, because the cut openings are the weak point and a drum pulls at them. Vacuum with a brush head every week or two, moving in the direction the pile lies. Dry clean once or twice a year. If a crease needs removing, hang the panel and steam it from the reverse. Never press an iron onto the face. Handle a laser cut panel by lifting rather than dragging when you hang it, so the openings take no pull. Dust matters here more than most people expect. Lahore summers bring dust storms, and June is the hottest month with average highs routinely passing 40°C, according to the Lahore District climate page published by the Government of Punjab. A cut or woven surface holds more dust than a flat one, so a window facing a main road wants vacuuming more often between April and June than one facing an inner courtyard. On the useful side of heat, the US Department of Energy reports that medium coloured draperies with a light backing cut heat gain by around a third when closed during the day, and that overlapping the two panels in the centre is part of what makes that work.

What is the difference between laser cut and monogram curtains?
