Kids bed sheets are cotton sheets cut for a child's bed and printed in designs children pick for themselves. A child's single bed takes a narrower sheet than an adult single, so size matters more here than in any other bedding category. What size sheet fits a child's bed

This is where most parents go wrong, and the market does not help. Kids single sheets in Pakistan are sold at two common widths, roughly 58 inches and roughly 70 inches, both about 96 inches long. Shops list both as single. They are not the same, and one of them will not tuck properly on your child's bed. So measure before you order. Take the length, width and depth of the gaddha with a tape, then check the measurement on the product page rather than trusting the word single. Every listing on our site carries its own size.

• Child's single bed: The narrower cut. Standard for a first bed after the cot.
• Bunk beds: Usually the narrower cut as well, and a fitted sheet is easier on the top bunk since you are not tucking in at arm's length.
• Older children sharing a double: Take a double or king size. Many kids designs are printed in both.

If the sheet keeps coming loose at night, a fitted sheet solves it properly. Children move far more in their sleep than adults do.

Which fabric suits a child's bed

Cotton, for one practical reason above all others. A child's bed gets washed two or three times as often as yours, and cotton takes repeated washing without going stiff or losing its shape. It also breathes through a Lahore summer, which matters when load shedding takes the fan out at two in the morning. You will see sellers promise fabric that is gentle on sensitive skin. Ask what the fabric actually is. A soft finish on a synthetic blend feels smooth in the shop and holds heat on the bed. Pure cotton with a plain weave is the safer choice for a child who gets prickly heat or wakes up sweating.

Plenty of shops here sell sheets carrying film, game and football club artwork without holding any licence for it. We do not, for two reasons that both come back to you. Copied printing is usually thinner cloth with weaker dye, because the seller is buying on price. And a theme design lasts longer in a child's room than a character does, which brings us to the next point.

Choosing something your child will still like next year

A five year old picks a favourite character and drops it within two years. The sheet does not wear out in that time, so you buy again. Themes age better. A jungle print or a football print stays acceptable to a nine year old in a way a cartoon face does not. A middle path many parents use is to let the child choose the pillow cover and cushion while you choose the sheet. The child still gets to pick, and the expensive piece stays usable. Cushion covers are cheap to replace.

Washing a child's bedding, and the dust mite question

This is the one place where the usual bedding advice and children's health advice pull in different directions, so it is worth being clear. For colour, cold water is better. For dust mites, which trigger asthma and allergy symptoms in a lot of children, hot water is better. The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America recommends washing sheets and blankets weekly at about 130 degrees Fahrenheit, roughly 55 Celsius, to kill mites. Mayo Clinic gives the same figure. There is a real caveat for a house with children. The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology notes that keeping home water above 130 Fahrenheit raises the risk of scalding, and advises keeping it no higher than 120 with weekly washing instead. It also points out that a cold wash still removes more than 90 percent of the allergen even though it does not kill the mites, since most mites die by drowning rather than by heat.

What that means in a normal Pakistani home

1. If nobody in the house has asthma or a dust allergy, wash cold or warm and weekly. The colour lasts longer and the allergen still comes off.
2. If a child does have asthma or allergy symptoms, use hot water, but heat it at the machine rather than turning the geyser up for the whole house.
3. Turn the sheet inside out. Skip bleach and softener.
4. Dry in shade. Lahore sun fades a print faster than the machine does.

Kansas State University Extension adds that washing at the wrong water temperature causes dye loss and shrinkage, which is why the two goals need balancing rather than one simply being right.

Bed wetting and protecting the mattress

Nobody advertises this and every parent deals with it. A waterproof mattress protector under the sheet saves the gaddha, and it costs far less than replacing one. Put the protector on the mattress, the fitted or flat sheet over it, and keep a second sheet folded in the cupboard so a change at three in the morning takes two minutes instead of twenty.

Moving from a cot to a first bed

Most children in Pakistan move out of the cot somewhere between two and three and a half. Buy two sheets rather than one at that stage. The first months in a big bed bring more accidents and more spills, and a spare means the bed gets made the same night rather than the next day.

Do you need separate designs for boys and girls?

Not really, and it limits you. Animals, space, sport and star prints suit any child, and they work better when two children share a room or when the bedding gets handed down. Pick by the colours already in the room and by what the child actually likes. If your daughter wants a football print, buy the football print.
