Which fabric suits your bed
The right fabric depends on your weather, not on the price tag. Cotton suits hot months, velvet suits cold ones, and jeans and cotton satin sit between them. Pakistan’s climate changes a great deal from Karachi to Quetta, so the same sheet will not feel right in every city.
Cotton breathes. Air moves through the weave and carries body heat away instead of holding it. That makes cotton the sensible choice for Multan and Sukkur summers, and for humid Karachi nights where a synthetic sheet turns sticky within an hour.
Cotton satin is still cotton, woven differently. The threads float across the surface instead of crossing at every point. The face comes out smoother, carries a light sheen and shows creases less. Many buyers choose it for a guest room or a bridal bed.
Jeans is a heavier, tighter weave. It takes hard daily use, holds its colour through repeated washing and works most of the year in the plains.
Velvet has a raised pile that traps warm air at the surface. It is wrong in June and right in January, especially in Islamabad, Peshawar, Quetta and anywhere further north.
Some ranges are blended with polyester to reduce creasing and keep the price down. Where a sheet is blended, the listing says so. We would rather tell you now than have you find out after the first wash.
What thread count actually tells you
A higher thread count does not automatically mean a better sheet. Above roughly 400, most counts are inflated by counting each strand of a twisted yarn separately. That raises the number on the label without adding any cloth.
Thread count is the number of threads woven into one square inch. Under the ASTM standard used across the textile trade, each yarn counts as one thread, even when it is spun from two or three finer strands twisted together. Not every seller follows that rule. Count each strand separately and a 300 becomes a 600 without a single extra thread going into the fabric. In a 2005 letter to the National Textile Association, the US Federal Trade Commission agreed that shoppers could be misled by counts inflated this way.
As a working guide:
- Ordinary cotton sheeting sits near 150.
- Good quality starts around 180.
- Above 200 is percale.
- Beyond 400, be careful, because a genuine single-yarn weave cannot go much higher without the cloth turning stiff.
Instead of chasing the number, ask three things: what the fabric is, whether the yarn is single or two-ply, and how heavy the cloth feels. A heavy 200 will outlast a thin sheet claiming 800.
How to choose the right size
Measure your mattress before you order. Pakistan has no fixed bedding size standard, so “double” means different measurements at different sellers. Take the mattress width and length in inches, then add about 20 inches to each so the sheet tucks under on all four sides.
Across the market, a double sheet can be 94 by 98 inches at one shop, 96 by 102 at another, and a king 95 by 99 somewhere else. The name is the same but the cloth is not, which is the most common reason a sheet ends up hanging short on one side.
If your mattress is deeper than usual, or has a topper on it, add more than 20 inches. For a fitted sheet, depth matters more than width. Measure the full thickness with the topper in place. Multani, jeans and panel: local bedding names explained
These three names describe a print style, a weave and a layout. None of them describes a colour or a brand. You hear them in every bedding shop in Pakistan, and they are rarely explained.
Multani is the block-printed style associated with Multan. It is built from repeated hand-drawn motifs in deep colours.
A panel sheet has one large central design instead of a pattern repeating edge to edge. On the bed it reads more like a picture than a print.
Jeans names the weave, not the colour. That is why a jeans bed sheet is often grey, maroon or green rather than blue.
Bedding for bridal, jahez and gifting
A bridal or jahez bed set needs to look finished on the bed and survive years of use afterwards. Choose the fabric for the season the couple will start in, and the size for the actual mattress in the new home, not a standard guess.
